Coinbase Launches Two AI Agents for Slack and Email

Coinbase has introduced two artificial intelligence agents designed to help workers automate tasks and interact with crypto systems directly from Slack and email. The move is part of the company’s broader push into what executives call the “agent economy” — a future where autonomous software systems handle financial transactions on their own.

The new tools allow AI agents to carry out several functions. They can execute transactions, manage funds, and interact with blockchain-based applications. All of this happens with limited human intervention.

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong said the agents are modeled after two legendary former Coinbase employees, Fred and Baaji. “To start we’re shipping two,” Armstrong said. The agents are integrated with Coinbase’s developer platform and can be deployed using pre-set commands.

These commands enable activities such as trading, sending payments, and earning yield. Developers can also set spending limits and controls to manage the risks that come with autonomous operations.

Is AI Wave taking Over?

The initiative aligns with a growing trend in the crypto industry. Firms are investing in tools that allow AI systems to transact independently. Armstrong and other executives have argued that blockchain networks are well suited for machine-to-machine commerce. Blockchains are always on and have programmable payment capabilities.

AI agents are already starting to conduct basic transactions. They can pay for data, computing power, and online services. However, the sector remains at an early stage of development.

Coinbase is positioning its own layer-2 network, Base, as a key platform for this activity. The goal is to support a future where autonomous agents play a much larger role in digital markets and payments.

Armstrong predicted that adoption could happen quickly. “Soon, it will be easy for any employee to spin up a new agent for themselves or their team,” he said. “I suspect we will have more agents than human employees at some point soon.”
